Secondment – University of Aberdeen, Scotland (02 October – 02 November 2019)

Towards the end of 2018, Jane completed a one-month secondment at the University of Aberdeen working with colleagues from the Faculty of Law and the Marine Biodiscovery Centre within the Faculty of Chemistry.

The aim of the secondment was to review business, legal and intellectual property (IP) aspects of a failed marine biotechnology start-up company. This involved research into strategies linked to:

  1. The business model (using the Business Model Canvas tool) – for the organisation at time of existence and potential alternative model
  2. Innovation management – whether and how this was used
  3. Protection of IP – whether any IP was protected, why and how
  4. Legal compliance – which types of legal considerations were taken into account

The study then focused on how the company could potentially have improved and avoided failure through review of strengths and weaknesses within the business model.
